The Premier League has referred Everton and Nottingham Forest to an independent commission after both clubs confessed to violating financial rules for the 2022-23 season. This could potentially result in a points deduction, further complicating their current battle against relegation.
Everton has already been penalized with a 10-point deduction earlier in the season for exceeding the allowed loss thresholds. They are appealing this decision, which marks the largest points punishment in Premier League history.
The Premier League stated that both clubs have breached the league’s profitability and sustainability rules by sustaining losses above the permitted thresholds. Separate commissions will be appointed to determine the appropriate sanctions for each club.
Everton has expressed their intention to defend their position and highlighted what they perceive as a deficiency in the Premier League’s rules, particularly in dealing with alleged breaches in financial periods that have already been subject to punishment.
Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, has acknowledged the charges and aims to cooperate fully with the Premier League with the expectation of a swift and fair resolution.
All Premier League clubs were required to submit their accounts for the 2022-23 campaign by December 31 to ensure any punishments are imposed during the season when the transgression took place. The regulations allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105 million over a three-season period or £35 million per campaign.
The potential for points deductions could significantly impact the Premier League survival battle, especially for Everton and Nottingham Forest, with any hearing needing to conclude by April 8 and the season’s final games scheduled for May 19.
