Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi etched his name in MLS history with a record-breaking performance against the New York Red Bulls.
The Argentine maestro orchestrated a dominant 6-2 victory by registering a staggering six goal contributions – scoring one goal and assisting five others. This sets a new MLS record for most contributions in a single match.
Messi’s brilliance extends beyond this game. He’s now notched a goal and assist in a remarkable six consecutive league matches, another unprecedented feat in MLS history.
While Coach Gerardo Martino showered Messi with praise, he also recognized the team effort:
“All [goals] were fundamental,” Martino said. “But Leo did something historic tonight…”
Martino highlighted Luis Suarez’s hat-trick and Alejandro Rojas’ brace, including a “stunning” first goal.
However, Messi’s “technical aspect on the assist” earned him the coach’s pick for the most aesthetically pleasing goal, even surpassing Suarez’s scissor kick.
