Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind Vinicius Junior in the race for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
Citing Vinicius’ impressive season with Real Madrid, Ferdinand believes the Brazilian winger is the current frontrunner for the prestigious award.
Vinicius racked up impressive numbers across 39 games, scoring 24 goals and assisting 11 as Real Madrid secured a historic treble.
While his national team performance was hampered by a suspension during Brazil’s quarter-final exit, Ferdinand believes Vinicius’ club achievements solidify his claim for the Ballon d’Or.
“In my opinion,” Ferdinand stated (source: Madrid Zone via Sportskeeda), “no other player has a stronger case than Vini Jr. He was Real Madrid’s most decisive player, instrumental in their Champions League and La Liga victories.
Of course, if Jude Bellingham continues his goalscoring form and leads England to Euro 2024 glory, he could be a contender too.”
