“Man City Can Cope Without Departing England Star” – Lescott

Everton’s Lescott Weighs in on Palmer’s Move to Chelsea

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott commented on Cole Palmer’s recent transfer to Chelsea for a reported £40 million.

The England youngster reportedly sought more playing time, having only featured in 25 games across all competitions for City last season with one goal and one assist.

Speaking on The High Performance Podcast, Lescott suggested the move was a mutual decision. “It was a combination of both,” he said. “He wanted to leave and they wanted to sell.”

Lescott believes prioritizing regular playing time could benefit Palmer’s development, potentially leading to a Euro 2024 call-up.

“Pep knew how good he is,” Lescott continued, suggesting City manager Pep Guardiola recognized Palmer’s talent.  “It wasn’t a bad decision by him [Palmer],” Lescott added, highlighting the player’s desire for more playing opportunities.

Lescott downplayed the impact of Palmer’s departure on City’s future success. “If City win the double and not the treble, it isn’t because Cole Palmer wasn’t there,” he stated.

He emphasized the strength of City’s system under Guardiola, suggesting they can overcome the absence of any single player.
