Leicester City Wins Appeal Against Premier League Over Financial Rules
Leicester City has successfully appealed a decision that could have resulted in a points deduction for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules.
The club argued that the independent commission ruling on the case lacked jurisdiction, as Leicester’s accounting period ended on June 30, 2023, after their relegation to the Championship.
The Premier League had alleged that Leicester exceeded the allowed loss threshold during their time in the top flight. However, the appeal board concluded that any losses incurred after June 30, 2023, could not be attributed to their time in the Premier League.
Leicester welcomed the decision, stating that it supported their position that any action against the club should be pursued in accordance with the applicable rules.
The Premier League expressed disappointment with the ruling, arguing that it effectively means they cannot take action against Leicester for exceeding the PSR threshold during their time in the top flight.
Leicester responded by emphasizing the Appeal Panel’s finding that they did not breach the PSRs for the relevant assessment period.
