The Nigerian Falconets moved closer to securing a spot in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a 1-0 victory over Burundi at the Azam Stadium Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Sunday.
Janet Akekoromowei, who plays for the Asisat Oshoala Academy in Lagos, secured the win by converting a first-half penalty.
Despite attempts to increase their lead in the second half, the Falconets were unable to score again, resulting in a 1-0 final scoreline.
The return leg is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
With the first-leg victory, the Falconets are in a favorable position to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
