Despite conceding a 99th-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw with group winners Cape Verde in the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt advanced to the last-16.
Initially tied 1-1, Egypt took the lead with a 93rd-minute goal but allowed Cape Verde to equalize in the 99th minute.
Despite drawing all three group games, Egypt secured a second-place finish due to Ghana’s late collapse, even though Egypt’s star player, Mohamed Salah, was injured and absent from the match.
Despite being favorites against Cape Verde, Egypt fell behind just before half-time. They managed to level the score at 1-1 on 50 minutes and then took the lead through Mostafa Mohamed’s goal.
However, Cape Verde equalized shortly after, causing Egypt to fear elimination. Nevertheless, Cape Verde’s equalizer did not change the group standings, as Ghana’s late collapse secured Egypt’s second-place finish, despite not winning any games in the group stage.
