The Three Lions’ preparations for the upcoming European Championship received a boost today with the announcement of two warm-up fixtures in June.
England will face Bosnia and Herzegovina for the very first time at Newcastle’s St James’ Park on June 3rd, before welcoming Iceland to the iconic Wembley Stadium on June 7th.
Both opponents bring intriguing challenges. Bosnia and Herzegovina are currently vying for a Euro 2024 berth through the play-offs, adding an extra layer of intensity to the historic encounter.
Iceland, meanwhile, need no introduction to English fans, having famously stunned the Three Lions in the Euro 2016 knockout stages.
Their visit to Wembley promises to be an emotional occasion, serving as a final send-off for England before they embark on their German adventure.
England manager Gareth Southgate expressed his excitement about the fixtures, highlighting the opportunity to connect with fans outside of London and the chance for a rousing farewell at Wembley:
It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with a different part of the country. Then, at Wembley, we’ll have another special occasion, allowing our supporters to give us a final send-off before the Euros.
The atmosphere will be electric, and we’ll be aiming to put on a performance that sends everyone into the tournament with optimism and excitement.”
These warm-up matches offer Gareth Southgate a valuable chance to experiment with tactics and formations, assess player fitness, and build team cohesion before the Euro 2024 kicks off in June.
With both opponents offering unique challenges, these games will provide crucial insights and momentum as England gears up for another shot at European glory.
