Jurgen Klinsmann’s tenure as South Korea’s head coach abruptly ended today after just 12 months.
Appointed in February 2023, his contract extended through the 2026 World Cup.
However, the team’s disappointing finish in the Asian Cup semi-finals, losing to Jordan, and reports of internal conflicts led to his departure.
Internal tensions reportedly involved captain Son Heung-min.
Son allegedly injured his finger during a disagreement with teammates related to team bonding practices.
While Klinsmann initially declared his commitment to the role, the Korean Football Association (KFA) ultimately felt a change in leadership was necessary.
Despite Klinsmann’s distinguished career with Germany and the USA, his short stint in South Korea fell short of expectations.
Their performance in the Asian Cup, where they were favored to win, saw them score only three goals before the semi-final defeat.
Son publicly expressed his frustration with the team’s performance.
The KFA expressed appreciation for Klinsmann’s efforts but indicated he wouldn’t be able to “exercise his leadership” effectively going forward.
The search for a new head coach to lead South Korea towards the 2026 World Cup is now underway.
