According to German media reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new co-owner of the Red Devils, personally reached out to the departing Bayern Munich boss to inquire about his availability for the upcoming campaign.
Despite Thomas Tuchel’s ill-fated recent stints at Chelsea and in Munich, the INEOS chief reportedly values him highly.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag, the current coach, is essentially on trial for the next month. Manchester United’s shocking collapse against Championship side Coventry City in the FA Cup semifinal, where they were only saved from ultimate embarrassment by VAR and a penalty shootout after letting a 3-0 lead slip, has put Ten Hag’s position under scrutiny.
Jason Wilcox, the new technical director, is leading a month-long audit on Ten Hag’s work and dressing room relations. He will eventually present his findings to Ratcliffe and the company.
A decision on whether to persist with the Dutchman or make a change will then be made.
As for Tuchel, while he is rated highly, there is an acceptance that he can be a difficult character. Recent reports suggest that Tuchel has been eyeing the job at Old Trafford, but Man Utd chiefs are right to be wary of his personality.
