Mikel Obi Backs Dortmund for Champions League Upset
Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder Mikel Obi has thrown his weight behind Borussia Dortmund in the upcoming Champions League final against Real Madrid.
The two clubs are set to clash on June 1st for Europe’s top club honor. Mikel Obi, a Champions League winner himself, believes Dortmund deserves the trophy more than the experienced Real Madrid squad.
“Honestly,” Obi told TribalFootball, “I really hope Borussia Dortmund win the UCL final. They deserve it more than Real Madrid.”
He went on to question the value of relying solely on past trophies, suggesting that some of Real Madrid’s veteran players, like Kroos, Nacho, Carvajal, and Modric, are not necessarily the best in their positions.
“When you see players who’ve won five Champions League trophies,” Obi said, “it’s a bit unfair, because these players aren’t even close to being the best in their positions. Trophies can be misleading. I can name 10 players in their positions who are better.”
Obi’s comments highlight the underdog narrative surrounding Dortmund and suggest a potentially exciting final.
