Former footballer Ally McCoist has weighed in on the debate surrounding England captain Harry Kane’s role in the team’s attack at Euro 2024.
While Kane recently scored his first goal of the tournament in the 1-1 draw against Denmark, England’s overall attacking performance has drawn criticism.
This has led some pundits, including McCoist, to question whether tactical adjustments are needed.
“Managers need to be courageous in their decision-making,” McCoist said in an interview with BoyleSports.
“Similar to Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation, if the team would benefit from a substitution, even for a player of Harry Kane’s stature, then that’s a decision a manager needs to make.”
McCoist suggested Ollie Watkins’ pace could provide a different option for England’s attack if Kane’s performances don’t improve.
With England facing Slovenia next on Tuesday, Gareth Southgate may need to consider his attacking strategy to maximize the team’s potential in the tournament.
