Former England Star Points Out Missing Piece for Euro Success

Chelsea icon Frank Lampard has expressed that England’s national team is noticeably lacking Luke Shaw’s contributions at left-back during Euro 2024.

Despite being selected by England’s coach Gareth Southgate for the squad, the Manchester United defender has not yet made an appearance in the tournament.

Since February, Shaw has been recuperating from a hamstring injury that sidelined him from playing with Manchester United.

This same injury has resulted in his absence from England’s opening two games at Euro 2024.

Lampard, speaking to BBC Radio 5 (as reported by Metro), highlighted the significance of a natural left-back, “The absence of a genuine left-footed left-back has been significant for [Southgate], especially since I really enjoyed the last tournament with Luke Shaw participating,” he said.

“Shaw brought a more attacking presence on that flank, allowing for a balance where Kyle Walker could tuck in, effectively forming a back three,” Lampard explained.

“This setup allowed the two midfielders to operate and the forwards to find space between the lines, with a real threat coming from the left side.

That’s something we’ve missed, and it’s an issue [Southgate] will undoubtedly want to address.”
