Chelsea Recall Ugochukwu from France’s Olympic Standby List
Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has been recalled by his club just days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 20-year-old was not included in France’s final 18-man squad for the tournament, but had been named as one of four reserve players by coach Thierry Henry. These reserves are eligible to be called up and play if any of the main squad members suffer injuries.
However, in a statement released on Friday, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed that Ugochukwu would no longer be part of the Olympic contingent.
“Lesley Ugochukwu leaves the Olympic selection,” the FFF statement read. “The midfielder is leaving the French Olympic Team and will not be among the reserves for the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament.”
The reasons behind Chelsea’s decision to recall Ugochukwu are not yet known.
