Nacional Defender Izquierdo Dies After On-Field Collapse
Juan Izquierdo, a defender for Nacional, has tragically passed away at the age of 27. The young player collapsed on the field during a Copa Libertadores match last Thursday in Brazil and was subsequently diagnosed with cardiac arrest. Despite receiving immediate medical attention and being taken to the hospital in critical condition, Izquierdo’s condition deteriorated, requiring the use of a ventilator.
“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones,” the club said on X. “All of Nacional is mourning his irreparable loss. RIP. Juan, you will be with us forever.”
The football world rallied around Juan Izquierdo following his hospitalization. Players from around the globe expressed their support and sent messages of strength to the injured defender. Luis Suarez, a fellow Uruguayan who played for Nacional, wore a shirt with the message “Fuerza, Juan” during a match for Inter Miami. Former Uruguay captain Diego Lugano visited Izquierdo in the hospital, joined by other members of the soccer community and Izquierdo’s family.
In a show of solidarity, Uruguayan soccer matches were postponed over the weekend, while Sao Paulo players wore shirts of support during their victory.
Izquierdo, who tragically passed away, leaves behind a wife and two children. During his career, he played for clubs in Uruguay, Mexico, and England, including Penarol, Wanderers, Liverpool, Cerro, and San Luis.
