Benin’s national football team endured a hostile reception during their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
The Squirrels managed to secure a crucial 0-0 draw, but the experience was marred by the aggressive behavior of Libyan fans and security personnel.
The Benin players, including captain Steve Mounie, were subjected to verbal abuse and had objects thrown at them. The team bus was also reportedly attacked, resulting in injuries to some of the players and staff.
Mounie described the situation as a “war zone” and criticized the lack of respect shown by the Libyan fans and authorities. This incident echoes the treatment faced by the Nigerian national team during their recent qualifier in Libya, where they also encountered hostility and logistical challenges.
